Frequently asked questions

What is the National Green Tribunal (NGT)?

The NGT was established under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010 to decide civil cases involving a substantial question relating to the environment arising under the enactments listed in Schedule I of the Act — including the Water Act, Air Act, Environment (Protection) Act and Biological Diversity Act — and to hear appeals under those laws. Its Principal Bench sits in New Delhi, with zonal benches at Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai.

Can an NGT order be appealed?

Yes. Section 22 of the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010 provides for an appeal to the Supreme Court within 90 days of communication of the NGT's order, on the grounds specified in Section 100 of the Code of Civil Procedure.
