Frequently asked questions

Which matters go to the Central Administrative Tribunal?

Under the Administrative Tribunals Act, 1985, the CAT adjudicates service matters of persons appointed to public services and posts in connection with the affairs of the Union, including recruitment, conditions of service, promotions and disciplinary matters.

Can a CAT order be challenged?

Yes. Following the Supreme Court's decision in L. Chandra Kumar v. Union of India (1997), orders of the CAT are subject to the writ jurisdiction of the High Court within whose territorial jurisdiction the tribunal bench falls, and thereafter to the Supreme Court.
